This 3D holographic sound is not used in movies,concerts,or performances,but for a multi sensory experience within a space.From August 21st to August 30th,the"Sound Cube-Super Sensory Space"was held at the 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum.The sound art project has only a history of over ten years in China and is still a relatively new field in modern art.This one hour'super sensory experience'is difficult to describe in words and difficult to'understand'.
The 3D holographic sound technology is composed of 129 speakers in the venue,numerous black balloons on the roof,and black curtains.There are not many spectators that can be accommodated.When the performance starts,the lights on site dim and sound rushes in from all around.I marvel at the amazing sound effects if used to screen horror movies.
The performance is divided into four parts:Radio Concerto,City Maze,Sound Shadow Duet,and Song of Floating Life.Simply put,a radio concerto is like piecing together abstract patterns on three large screens and scenes that cross time and borders to materialize radio waves in the air.The city maze is based on the venue land to tell the story of the city and people,collect the voice and old images of Shanghai,and rap actors'tongue twisters."DuDuDuDuDu,sell sugar Congee,three jin sugar Congee two jin shell"shows the nostalgic side of Shanghai.The Sound Shadow Duo is composed of jazz and dancers,with the dancers appearing on large screens and on real stages,while the saxophonist appears and disappears in space due to the interplay of light.The musicality of the entire performance gradually increased with each chapter,reaching its peak in the'Song of Floating Life'.Digital young male and female singers are scattered in the space,speaking in a disorderly manner,singing in multiple voices,laughing and panting,expressing their understanding of"floating life".
Dancers,singers,visuals,lighting,and the most exhausting auditory experience,in the current era where Chinese people are not familiar with sound art and even modern art,it is not easy to fully produce this performance created by Shanghai Conservatory of Music.Unfortunately,it does not seem to have achieved the creators'desire of"allowing viewers to interact and resonate with the creators through sensory acceptance".The first chapter is about synesthesia.When the viewer looks at abstract symbols and listens to the sound of radio waves,they have just entered the play.At the end,the applause is a bit sparse.The second chapter should be the most resonant part for viewers,whether it's the sound of Shanghai,the old alleys and ruins after demolition,the elderly chatting in the alleys,or the Shanghai nursery rhymes that can touch the audience to some extent.Especially the section where meaningless noise from construction sites evolved into the sound of drums and gongs,and the percussion music composed of different metals was quite shocking.However,this chapter intentionally down-to-earth in form,but in depth,it is almost the same as a documentary about a fleeting glimpse of old Shanghai.Without deep support,sensory curiosity and stimulation appear relatively superficial.
The third paragraph is purely beautiful,and the jazz dancers are also leisurely.The coexistence of the two in three-dimensional space is quite beautiful,but unfortunately still lacks some core tension.The rhythm of the last chapter is tense enough,and the multi part choir is powerful due to professional expertise.However,such music is not yet sufficient to match its name-'Song of Floating Life',after all,such a large proposition cannot be summarized by the melody and music words alone.
However,art is a matter of personal preference.If you are willing to experience it firsthand,you don't need to know the themes of the four chapters"Universe,City,Humans,and Emotions".Just open up all your senses in space.
